Hand Crafted Ceramics

Hawk Haven grew out of a tribute to Lori Badura's late husband, John Parker, who spent many hours watching the nesting raptors on their property in West Boylston, Massachusetts. After his death, she turned to ceramic arts as a way to cope with grief and found in it a new passion for creative expression. Her works reflect a connection between nature and our place within it as humans, celebrating the diversity of texture, color, and form inherent in the world around us.

Nerikomi is a Japanese ceramics technique involving coloration of the clay body with mason stains or other pigments. In wheel throwing, colored clays are stacked so that unique patterns form during the pulling and shaping process. Unglazed pieces possess a look and texture resembling stone. Coating the work with a transparent glaze leads to more vibrant color and a reflective surface.

Creating depth in the surface of pottery through carving, water etching, or the use of textured glazes adds a unique character to each ceramic work. Textured wares allow an additional level of expression for the artist's interpretation of cultural and historical pottery techniques using modern materials and methods.

Fluidity of ceramic glazes is the cornerstone of most pottery in the modern age. Glazes with high degree of movement and potential for unpredictable interaction when layered with other glazes are becoming increasingly available, providing unlimited opportunity to explore how the chemical make up of each glaze performs on different forms and in different combinations.
Looking forward to meeting you!
